Cantonements Divisional Command has arrested about 19 women and a male who are alleged to be prostitutes involved in commercial sex activities. The suspects are said to be between the ages of 20 and 35. A man who was allegedly patronising the services of one of the sex workers was also arrested by the police.
They were all arrested near the Togo and Italian Embassies, Danquah Circle and some parts of Cantonments in Accra, where they carry out the operation. According to reports, undercover policemen stormed the areas known to be the dominated area for the suspected commercial sex workers.
It was also said that the suspects had paraded themselves soliciting for men when the police grabbed them between 1:00 am and 3:00 am on Saturday and Sunday. The Crime Officer of the Cantoments District Police Command, ASP Benjamin Baah, said the arrest came after some public complaints of the activities in the area.
Residents in that area had complained many a time about the illegal operations of the prostitutes. They also complained to the police that some of the alleged prostitutes usually blocked the roads when people did not pay attention to them.
We have observed the activities of these prostitutes. Out of our own intelligence and coupled with complaints from the public, we embarked on an exercise last Saturday night to arrest these prostitutes and in total we arrested nineteen of them which include a male,” he said.
Furthermore, the alleged prostitutes were reported to constitute nuisance in the area by engaging in other illegal activities such as snatching of mobile phones and blackmailing people.
However, some reports suggest that the alleged prostitutes have been charged with soliciting for immoral purposes and have also been fined GHC 300 each by an Accra circuit court.
