Kumasi Terror: New Gang Of Robbers Reported; Police In Control

There has been robbery terror in Kumasi in recent times and the residents of the area have been living in fear. A statement made by the Ashanti Regional Police Command revealed there are about four suspected robbers believed to be behind the recent Kumasi robbery cases

According to reports, there have been two consecutive robbery incidents in the regional capital. The height of it all is the fact that a police officer was shot and killed at Denkyemmuoso after some robbers raided the hotel. Another resident was also killed at Ahenema Kokoben.

These robbery incidents have left residents of the area in fear and paranoia. Regional Commander, DCOP Kofi Boakye who addressed journalists on Monday, has tried to calm the fears of Kumasi residents assuring them that the Police is on top of the situation. He also told the people that the police will do everything possible to protect their lives.

DCOP Kofi Boakye during the statement after a Regional Security Council (REGSEC) meeting, revealed the possibilities of the recent attacks being perpetrated by a new group of robbers. He said there are about three or four who are have been terrorizing people around Kokoben and the outskirts of Kumasi. For this reason the Regional Commander said he has informed the Inspector General of Police about the development and asked for more personnel to beef up security in the area.

During one of the many robbery attacks which has left Kumasi residents in terror, a police officer, Corporal Frank Essel, who was a driver with the SWAT Unit at the Ashanti Regional Police Headquarters, was shot by armed robbers. The robbers stormed the Open Space Hotel at Denchemouso in Kumasi around 7:30pm on Thursday, robbing people of their valuables.

It was during the operation that the Corporal was shot dead. The police have placed a GHC 5,000 bounty on the persons who killed the police officer.
