If I am permitted, I’ll say that Ghana is beginning to bite more than it can chew by seemingly making herself a welcoming arms for all sorts of suspected terrorists. An Islamic scholar named Dr. Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips who has a history of exciting terrorism through his radical teachings, and was deported and banned from both the US and UK for same purpose is now in Ghana to deliver same kind of ‘sermons’ to the Muslims in the country.
Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips has been secretly linked to the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Centre which claimed 6 lives and left a thousand wounded. The US tagged him an “unindicted co-conspirator”, and therefore deported him from the United States in 1994.
Intelligence sources also say he is closely identified with Mohammed Jamal Khalifa, brother-in-law of the late Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
The Canadian Muslim teacher, speaker and writer who was born, Dennis Bradley Philips was also deported from the Philippines, Bangladesh and Kenya, where he had been invited to address Islamic conferences. He is currently banned from entering the United States and Australia.
However, Dr. Bilal Philips has repeatedly denied connections to terrorist activities, insisting the west led by America, is only demonizing him.
In a letter he personally wrote while in detention in the Philippines where he was later deported for the same accusations, he accused the western media of sensational journalism meant to portray him as evil. Below is the letter:
Now, the question is: “How can an individual with such questionable identity and history freely enter the country without much ado?”
Moreover, he not only entered the country, but is currently publisizing his activities and programmes on the social media, precisely on his official Facebook page. On his Facebook page, which has more than 4 million followers, Philips is described as a former Christian who converted to Islam in 1972.
His scheduled of ‘sermons’ in Ghana started on the 4th and will end on the 12th of this month. He is expected to be in Tamale for another lecture at the Tamale Jubilee Park today [Monday] February 8, titled “Islamic Identity Under Globalization” between 8:00 and 11:00pm. At the Tamale UDS on the 9th, he will hold another lecture titled “Islam and Media: Enemies or Foes” from 10:00am-12:00pm.
Meanwhile, he has already delivered lectures on the theme “Insurgency In God’s Name: Revelation or Rebellion”. Sheik Philips is also believed to be the author of the book, Western culture, led by the United States, is the enemy of Islam.
However, all these allegations are still unfounded as there are no clear evidences to prove that the Muslim scholar, Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips is a terrorist. But, I still feel that Ghana needs to be more careful.
