Navio Chief Escapes Death As Angered Paga Youths Burn Palace


It was a near death experience on Thursday for Naviopio Adam Kwarasei II, the Navio Chief at Paga in the Upper East Region when some aggrieved youths stormed his palace and set it ablaze in a bid to take his life.

According to reports, wanting to kill the Navio Chief, some unknown persons alleged to be youths of Paga stormed the palace firing guns and wielding machetes, and subsequently set the palace on fire. The chief raced barefoot into the bush, leaving his family and property behind.

The Navio Chief reportedly escaped on a motorbike after he managed to escape the scene with the help of some elders. The motive behind the attack has not been known at the moment.

However, the Paga District Police Commander, DSP Isaac Kojo who confirmed to Citi News that the incident took place around 1:30 pm on Thursday said they received a distress call from an unknown person stating that some “youth of Paga and Shaka surrounded the palace wanting to kill the chief…”

The police, fire service and some security agencies were immediately dispatched to the area to control the situation. According to the police sources, the culprits had set the palace and about two rooms on fire before the security team arrived at the scene.

“So far, two rooms were burnt and the chief is nowhere to be found but the people are telling the Police that the chief is fine,” DSP Isaac Kojo Forson said.

He also noted that they have so far arrested six people in connection with the attack and will soon process them for court.

Meanwhile, there are speculations that the attack was motivated by a longtime rift between the Chief of Navio and the Paramount Chief of Paga, Pe Charles Awiah Awampaga II. However, information gathered so far based on the allegation have not yet been verified.
