The Tema Regional Police Command got Obinim arrested together with one of his junior pastors on Tuesday over allegations of fraud involving a whopping Ghc11.6 million!
Bishop Obinim was given a 24-hour ultimatum by the Tema Police Headquarters to report for questioning. This was after he refused to show up at the station after complaints of physical assault was lodged against him over his flogging of a teenage boy and girl for alleged fornication and attempted abortion. He finally showed up on Friday. However, Obinim never regrets his action as he insists that the public lashing was a directive from God.
While the case of Obinim lashing two teenagers in a public church service is still under investigation, he gets indicted for an even more serious offence – fraud! According to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) PRO, ASP Joseph Darkwa, the complainant initially gave a family gold proceeds of Ghc780,000 to a witch doctor, Okomfo Gyapata of Mampong Nkwanta near Koforidua in the Eastern Region to perform some rituals to bless the money.
This he said happened in November, 2015. Up till now, the Okomfo has failed to perform the required rituals and has also failed to return his money to him. The gold dealer then decided in June 2016, to approach Obinim for help. According to him, he wanted Obinim to help him retrieve his money from the native doctor and as well perform the sacrifice of blessing the money which he had wanted the juju priest to carry out.
On relating his predicament to Obinim, he had advised the man to bring the rest of the gold proceeds to him; an amount of Ghc11.6 million also belonging to the family. The man obeyed, and that was how the money got trapped in the pocket of the ‘Angel’.
After making futile attempts to have his money back, the man decided to report Obinim at the Tema Regional Police Command who subsequently had Obinim arrested together with one of his junior pastors on Tuesday. They were later in the day transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Accra.
A video of his arrest which has since gone viral shows Obinim shouting ”Jesus Christ edi nkunim” [Jesus Christ has won] repeatedly while he was being led away handcuffed by the police. His supporters who thronged the scene were also busy responding “Amen and Amen” with much enthusiasm. He is yet to be charged with any offence.
