Alhassan Suhuyini, host of Radio Gold’s ‘Alhaji & Alhaji’ political show, and NDC parliamentary nominee for the Tamale North Constituency, has urged residents of the Northern Region of Ghana to vote massively for President Mahama for him to win in the upcoming elections.
Mr Suhuyini made reference to past presidents of Ghana, pointing out how the electorate in their various hometowns voted massively for them to win when they rose up to contest for the presidency.
He however, lamented over the cold attitude of the northerners towards Mahama in his presidential race. According to him, Mahama has been the only Ghanaian president who has been able to win the elections without the support of his own brethren.
Alhassan made these statements while addressing students of the Northern School of Business (NOBISCO), where he presented relief items to victims of a recent inferno which razed the Gbewaa Boys dormitory. His words:
“When a Voltarian stood to be President, the whole of Volta Region voted for him until he stopped being President – Jerry John Rawlings. And when Ashanti man stood to be President, the whole of Ashanti Region rallied behind him until he stopped to become President, President Kufour.”
“When Professor Atta Mills decided to run for President the whole of central region, his home region, voted massively for him before he could win in 2008. And do you know the sad news? When John Mahama from the northern region decided to be President in 2012, the NDC in northern region lost 11 constituencies.”
“For the first time in the history of this country in the fourth Republic, we had a President who won to be President without the support of his home region.”
Continuing, Mr Suhuyini enumerated the various projects the Mahama administration has accomplished in the region. They include; the Tamale International Airport, the teaching hospital, the Sawla-Fufulso road, schools and so on.
Alhassan explained that Mahama carried out all these project because of his love for the country and especially, for northerners. He therefore urged the people of the north to return the same love to the President by voting massively for him in the coming 2016 elections.
He however, pointed out that the Mahama never carried out these life changing projects out of a biased mind against other regions, but because he knows that he will someday retire and come home to be with his people.
Although tribal politics been condemned severally, almost all political groups are guilty of the offence as they always try to take advantage of ethnic differences to earn support in one way or the other.
