2015 Nigeria Presidential Elections Results: Comprehensive Facts, Figures and Photos

The March 28, 2015 Nigeria Presidential Elections is the most remarkable in the history of Nigeria as a Federal Republic. It is the one time in the history of a country where corruption is said to be prevalent, that the  citizens were allowed free and fair votes by the majority party, PDP, which has ruled for four consecutive tenures, (a total of 16 years). According to records, it is the first time an opposition party won a presidential election since the inception of democracy in the country. The first time the dividends of democracy was given the rightful place in the country’s politics. All the 36 states of the country, and the Federal capital Territory(FCT) fully participated with much enthusiasm, in the just concluded elections.

After the elections, Nigerian citizens followed up the election results with what I’ll call “an eagle’s eye” – with much keenness and curiosity. They never wanted to be fooled this time around. Even Nigerians in diaspora who never participated practically in the voting process were seen in their various homes abroad watching all the proceedings of the elections on screen. The election also attracted so much international concern and attention. Prior to the elections, the US President, Barrack Obama encouraged Nigerians to cast their votes peacefully and avoid all forms of violence. In fact, I don’t think it would be an overstatement if I say that the Nigeria Elections was watched by the whole world!

Significantly, the flag bearer of the opposition party, Gen. Buhari has contested for the presidential post three consecutive times and failed. That is, in the 2003, 2007, and 2011 presidential polls. After the 2011 polls, he so much lost hope that Nigerians will ever vote him into power, and therefore decided never to contest again. However, his age long ambition to serve as a President of Nigeria refused to die, and he gathered motivation to give it a try once more this year, 2015. Lo and behold, beyond the expectations of many Nigerians, General Muhammadu Buhari emerged winner of the 2015 Nigerian Presidential Elections.

Giving further details on the election result, the INEC Chairman said that Buhari polled a total of 15,424,921 votes to defeat incumbent President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), his closest rival who scored 12,853,162 votes. He said the result indicted that Buhari beat Jonathan by 2,571,759 votes, obtained 25 per cent of votes cast in 27 states and the Federal Capital Territory, while Jonathan obtained 25 per cent of votes cast in 26 states and the FCT.

The President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan shocked every Nigerian by the way he wholeheartedly conceded defeat. On realising that he had lost in the elections, as theannouncements of the results were still in progress, he personally called his rival, Muhammadu Buhari on phone and congratulated him on his victory even before the before he was declared winner. The following day, he made a Historic Post-Election Result Speech which sent called chills down the spine of all Nigerians, conveying his appreciation to one and all.

The most interesting thing about the whole show is that the elections were held peacefully and we give all thanks to God for that.
