58 Ashanti Chiefs have declared unwavering support for the New Patriotic Party Flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2016 general elections
Not less than 58 chiefs in the Atwima Kwanwoma area of the Ashanti region endorsed Nana Addo as their choice president come the December polls. This declaration from the chiefs comes on the first day of Nana Addo’s second campaign tour of the Ashanti region which kicked off on Wednesday, the 19th of October.
Speaking on behalf of the gathering chiefs, Nana Yaw Owusu, the Mpaboahere of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II expressed their discontent with the ruling National Democratic Congress. He stated that although traditional rulers are forbidden from practicing partisan politics, that would however, not stop them from making comments on political issues or casting their votes.
According to the Mpaboahere, the governing NDC has since neglected the concerns of the Ashanti people because they have been staunch supporters of the opposition party. Yaw Owusu however stated categorically, that the neglect will not deter them from still voting the NPP this time. He therefore urged his colleagues to unanimously vote out the ruling party come this year’s election.
Addressing party supporters at the occasion, Nana Yaw Owusu asked those that will vote the NPP on December 7 to clap their hands and a thunderous applause followed.
Nana Addo expressed his gratitude for the massive support from the traditional rulers and promised to effect massive development and improvement of the economy for businesses to thrive in the region if given the mandate.
Meanwhile, this unequivocal support from 58 Ashanti chiefs has been perceived by many as a threat to major contender, NDC. Especially, while considering the fact that is is coming when the elections are already around the corner – 47 days to go!
