National Organiser for the National Democratic Congress, Kofi Adams says the NPP’s Mr Akufo-Addo should not be expecting electoral victory based on their comparison with the political situation in Ghana with that of Nigeria in their last presidential elections.
According to Kofi Adams, Nigeria’s opposition party All Progressives Congress (APC) was able to win the historic 2015 election because it was led by a ‘unifier’, Mahamudu Buhari.
Speaking on Joy FM, Kofi Adams described flag bearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a a divisive character.
The leader of the opposition party in Ghana, Nana Addo Akufo-Addo has been suggesting that the current political situation in Ghana is similar to the Nigerian case before the country’s 2015 election. based on this, he has been urging Ghanaians to follow the Nigerian example by restricting Mahama to a one-term administration.
Among other similarities, we would recall that similar to Mr Akufo-Addo’s case, President Buhari of Nigeria was a three-time aspirant before he won the presidency. Also, former president Goodluck Jonathan took over from his boss, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua when he died, which was the same case with president John Mahama of Ghana.
Highlighting this similarity, Mr Akufo-Addo said “Nigeria showed the way last year…we hope this will turn out into a lesson Ghanaians can learn from our neighbours that change is sometimes needed after just one full term”.
He added that the poor state of the economy in Ghana provides further evidence that President John Mahama does not deserve a second-term.
But reacting to this charge, Kofi Adams said Buhari formed an alliance of several opposition parties and also got important governors even in the ruling party to endorse his bid. But Akufo-Addo is “sacking his people. He has gotten his chairman off, he has gotten General Secretary off, he has gotten his vice-chairman off and many others”, Kofi Adams argued.
The NPP last year, suspended its elected National Chairman Paul Afoko, General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong and first Vice-Chairman Sammy Crabbe. They were accused of undermining party structures and working to frustrate the party’s efforts to get its flagbearer Akufo-Addo elected as president.
Kofi Adams said Mahamudu Buhari, whom Akufo-Addo admires, commended President Mahama’s administration which Akufo-Addo criticises.
Kofi Adams also rejected a popular NPP claim that President Mahama’s government is corrupt. He said an appropriate evaluation of the government’s anti-corruption crusade is the report authored by world anti-corruption body, Transparency International. The report, he said, shows Ghana’s rankings have improved.
Kofi Admas conclude by saying that, “Corruption is not measured based on a desperate opposition leader’s comments.”
