The Ashanti regional Police Commander, DCOP Kofi Boakye has kindled the wrath of the parliament against him. DCOP Boakye allegedly threatened to arrest a member of the parliament, Kwadwo Baah Agyemang in a phone discussion last Thursday.
This came after the MP joined the residents of Asante Akyim Agogo in the Ashanti region to embark on a demonstration. Kofi Boakye accused the MP of the region of inciting the youth to attack the Fulani herdsmen in the area which led to the death of one of them and one other seriously injured.
The speaker of the parliament, who has decided to interfere in the case is demanding for the audio of the threat of arrest in question. The Minority in Parliament subsequently petitioned the Speaker to haul the Ashanti Regional Police Commander before Parliament’s Privileges Committee for his actions.
According to the MP’s, DCOP Boakye acted against the laws of Ghana which says that ‘an MP can only be arrested through laid down parliamentary procedure’. It was gathered that the parliament would reach a decision on what to do with the police commander.
However, the MP in question has completely denied being a party to the Asante-Fulani bloody clash. It was on the contrary, gathered that the MP made some statements that moved the youths to carry out the demonstration which turned bloody. It was also reported that the MP has since gone into hiding after the DCOP declared him a wanted man.
Latest reports from the area says two locals have been shot dead following renewed clashes between Fulani herdsmen and local farmers. The deceased persons yet to be identified are believed to have been shot at close range, by the Fulani herdsmen.
Following the latest incident, the Ashanti Regional Security Council, has deployed military personnel to the area to forestall further instability.
