Kumasi Movie Stars who seem to be fed up with the name ‘Kumawood’ with which they have hitherto been addressed has disclosed plans of taking up another brand name.
‘Kumawood’ is a name that has been widely used to address actors, actresses and generally, all movie makers in Kumasi. However, recent reports from Flex Newspaper has revealed that this group of artistes are opting for a change of name.
According to the report, serious plans to effect the change are ongoing already. One of the Kumasi Movie Stars, actor Benard Nyarko popularly known as Bishop said it is high time they stopped being addressed as Kumawood actors considering the negative impression the name creates in the minds of the people. Bishop explained his dislike for being addressed as a Kumawood actor instead of a Ghanallywood actor.
He recalled an ugly incident where a lady had loudly addressed him as ‘one of the Kumawood actors’ at a filling station. For him, it should be Ghallywood not Kumawood, considering the fact that they [the actors and actresses in Kumasi] are all Ghanaians. He also pointed to the fact that since the Nigerian movie industry is known as Nollywood, India as Bollywood; that of Ghana should also be Ghallywood.
From all indications, the Kumasi Movie Stars are fed up with the name ‘Kumawood’ because they think it connotes illiteracy and low class.
Ace movie producer and CEO of Christian Movies, Mr. Clement Amankwa, told Flex Newspaper in a phone interview that stakeholders in the movie industry have formed a new association to help each other. He disclosed that the proposed mane for the association is Ghana Association of Movie Industry (GAMI).
According to Mr Amankwa, the objective of GAMI Vision is to see to the welfare of all stakeholders in the movie industry by providing them with financial support and life assurance.
Now, the big question is, if the Kumasi Movie Stars are determined to drop the name ‘Kumawood’, what name will they chose to replace it? Could it be the new GAMI Vision, or the already existing Ghallywood?
