President John Dramani Mahama will play in the 2016 Vodafone Unity Match come 11th of June in Accra.
This information was confirmed by the Sport Minister, Hon. Nii Lante Vanderpuye when Stephen Appiah paid a courtesy call on him.
According to the Sports Minister, the President before leaving the country for an international assignment in Cote d’Ivoire, pledged full support for the games.
Speaking to the press, Hon. Nii Lante explained that before Mahama left for the official visit in Cote d’Ivoire, he met with him to talk about the Black Stars game against Mauritius and factored in the Vodafone Peace Match. He indicated that the President was very happy with the initiative and told him he will play in the match ‘even if for two minutes’.
The Minister, however, did not indicate whether the President will play for the World XI Team or the Black Stars. We will certainly get a wind of that subsequently.
Meanwhile, legendary Ghanaian football personality, Abedi Pele has been named coach of the star-studded World XI Team ahead of the games.
The 2016 Vodafone Unity Match is meant to campaign for peace before, during and after the November 2016 General elections in Ghana.
The Unity Match will see former Black Stars captain, Stephen Appiah lead a plethora of stars for the games coming up on June 8 and 11 in Kumasi and Accra respectively.
Stephen Appiah’s World IX will play Kumasi Asante Kotoko at Baba Yara on the 8th and later engage the Black Stars on 11th at the Accra Sports Stadium.
