Though he no longer plays for the club, Michael Essien is particularly a household name in the Chelsea Football Club as a result of his almost a decade commitment to the club.
Michael who was born on December 3rd, 1982 began his football career in a local club in his native Ghana, called Liberty Professionals.
He broke through when he played in the 1999 FIFA U-17 World Championship in New Zealand. This led to attention from some European scouts; Batsia, Olympic Lyonnais, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Milan, Panathinaikos, and currently Persib.
He joined Chelsea in 2005 after the Blues agreed a £24.4 million fee for the player and made his debut as a second-half substitute against Arsenal on 21 August 2005.
Essien built a strong bond with the then manager Mourinho who now manages Manchester United. He claimed the Premier League title, FA Cup and League Cup under Mourinho’s stewardship and clearly still possesses a strong relationship with the Portuguese.
