Police retrieve ballots found in a Kumasi hotel, but confirmed them fake…
It has been confirmed by the Ashanti Regional Police Command, that the purported bags of thumb-printed ballot papers found in a hotel in Kumasi, are fake. Ashanti Regional Police Commander, COP Nathan Kofi Boakye who made this known, confirmed that the said papers are not genuine.
Addressing the media, COP Boakye said that the Regional Director of the of Electoral Commission, Serebour Quarcoo, confirmed that the purported ballot papers were not genuine, following further investigations.
Earlier reports had said that Police in Kumasi had taken possession of three bags stuffed with thumb-printed presidential ballot papers found at the Madison Hotel at TUC, in the Ashanti Regional capital. The reports suggested that all the ballot papers had thumb prints for President John Mahama, the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). But police retrieved the ballots found in the building, after which they were confirmed fake.
On Monday morning, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, led the police in Kumasi to a location where the said fake ballots thumb-printed for the President were retrieved. The papers were discovered in bags at the hotel after the Monday morning search. The search was led by some policemen, some NPP parliamentary candidates and the party’s regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako.
COP Boakye has said the retrieved ballot papers did not have serial numbers and are therefore invalid. The Electoral Commission has also said that the fake ballots will not count as valid votes, even if they found their way into the ballot box.
