This is really a sad one .. two brothers who were mistaken to be robbers were shot dead by the police. The incident happened at about 2:00 am on Wednesday.
Francis Benneh, a teacher at the Asante Mampong Midwifery College in the Ashanti Region, and his brother, were the unfortunate victims of the incident. There had been a robbery operation going on in the school and the police had been called to intervene.
According to ASP Yusuf Mohammed Tanko, the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, the two were seen speeding on a motorbike when the police arrived the scene of the robbery. The police had continuously asked them to stop and when they refused, the police had fired at them after an object which appeared like a gun was seen on the driver.
They pursued them for some time and the pillion rider turned, so when he turned, they mistook the turning and because he was holding something that appeared to be a weapon, they thought he was turning to shoot them so they shot at them,” ASP Tanko said.
The two brothers died instantly from the gunshot wounds. However, it was discovered later on that the deceased people were not the robbers. Rather, they were just helping hands who had run out looking for help for the people who were attacked by the robbers.
This has really saddened the police and they are bent on finding out who the real robbers are.
It is a very serious matter and an unfortunate one as well. The Command is not happy about it at all. As I speak to you, a delegation has been sent by the Command to ascertain the situation and also investigate the matter and if the officers who went on that particular duty are found culpable, then the necessary action will be taken against them,” ASP Tanko added.
The ASP extended hs condolences to the family of the victims. The bodies of the deceased ones have been deposited at the morgue. This is so heartbreaking, we pray God gives them the to bear the painful loss.
