Stephen Appiah Pleads with Fans to Renew Support for the Black Stars

Former Black Stars captain, Stephen Appiah pleads with fans of Ghana’s National Team to renew their support of the team ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers coming up later this year.

Ghana is making serious attempts to make it to the World Cup this time. They are in Group E with Egypt, Uganda and Congo Brazzaville.

However, Ghanains are yet to get over the embarrassment they were caused by the team in the last World Cup hosted in 2014 in Brazil. The events in the last World Cup have drastically affected the zeal and enthusiasm of fans towards the Black Stars.

It is on this note that Stephen Appiah pleads with fans to once again, get behind the team for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers. Speaking to Sammy Bartels, host of “The Game” on GH One Television at the Milo U-13 Champions League final in Kumasi, Appiah said:

“All the things we are seeing is all because of what happened in Brazil. But Ghanaians know that the team is very good. The only issue now is attendance. It is not like what we used to enjoy. We need to put everything aside. The Black Stars is the only senior male team that we have and so, we have to move on and support the Black Stars,” Appiah stated.

“Every group in the qualifiers is a tough one because each country wants to make it to the World Cup. Like we have seen in the Euros, smaller nations have become better. But knowing the Black Stars, I am certain that they will make it to the World Cup”, he added.

The cold feet and dwindled interest of Ghanaians towards the national team is so glaring that it can no longer go unnoticed. We could still recall how the Black Stars were recently brought to the brink of tears by the reaction of fans to their win that qualified them the 7th consecutive time for the African Cup of Nations. Despite the staggering 2-0 victory against Mauritius to qualify for the 2017 AFCON on Sunday, June 5, in the city of Belle Vue Maurel, the team was greeted by a heartbreaking level of disillusionment from fans.
