It happened that on Saturday morning at about 10 o’clock near the American Embassy at the Cantonments area of Accra, two men armed with guns on motorbikes attacked a lady who is reportedly a staff at Koala Shopping Mall to snatch some huge sums of money they believed she was having according to information given to them by the one who masterminded the attack.
Unfortunately for them, they found no such amount on her, and out of annoyance, they gave the lady two gun shots on the leg and tried to escape. As fate would have it, a taxi driver who emerged at the scene at that moment did what everyone believed to be a heroic act by speeding up and crashing into the two robbers who have mounted their motor bike to escape. His brave move succeeded in bringing the robbers down with serious injuries such that they could not move an inch. The taxi also sustained considerable damages as it plunged into a roadside ditch.
It was gathered that even in their injured state, the robbers continued to shoot to scare people away, hoping to get a chance of escape. But an armed soldier who emerged at the scene of the incident right on time intervened and got them arrested.
While speaking on the issue, former president Jerry John Rawlings who highly commended bothe the taxi driver and the soldier said:
The boldness exhibited by the taxi driver was truly heroic and patriotic. At the risk of his own life he confronted these armed men, damaged his taxi in the process and ensured they did not escape the law. We should all applaud his courage. The two men deserve national recognition for their bravery,” the former President said.
It was soon discovered through police investigations, that the brain behind the robbery is a supervisor at the Koala shopping Mall, a 36 year old man named Gilbert Osabutey, who has information on the daily sales of the attacked co-staff. It was reported that the lady usually make huge sales after which she deposits the proceeds at the bank on a daily basis. He therefore tipped the men whose names were given as Abaliku Sannie, 35, and Oko Quaicoo, 30, to rob the staff on her way to the bank that day. Unfortunately for them, for one reason or the other, the sales girl was not having any such money on her that fateful day.
The Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command ASP Afia Tenge, while narrating the incident to Citi News said:
The lady always goes for the daily sales from the mall so the Supervisor contacted others to rob her so they could take the day’s sales from her, but that day the lady did not take the money at all. On realizing that the lady had no money on her, the robbers shot her in the thigh and calf and attempted to escape.”
A taxi driver who witnessed the incident and wanted to prevent the robbers from escaping blocked the robbers with his taxi cab, causing them to fall in the process, leading to their arrest.”
So far the police have gathered that this whole act was masterminded by a Supervisor at the Koala Shopping Mall. He engaged four other accomplices to perpetuate the act,” ASP Afia Tenge revealed.
Based on the investigations we have conducted, we believe more people are connected to the case so we are still investigating the matter”, she added.
Meanwhile, the victim of the robbery attack is currently undergoing treatment at the 37 Military Hospital. The Accra regional Police Commander, COP George Akuffo Dampare, yesterday visited the victim at the hospital and tells Citi News that she is responding to treatments.
