Running mate of the Presidential Candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced that he will aid pupils in basic schools who have been learning on bare floor by providing them with 500 desks.
He made this promise after the pitiable condition of the pupils of the Kperisi Primary School in the Upper West Regional capital, Wa, was mentioned by the media.
It was reported by Joy News‘ Rafiq Salam that over 500 pupils of the School, lie prostrate on the dirty bare floor to write because they are without furniture.
Dr. Bawumia, who made a brief stop at the School yesterday [Friday], while on his way to the Wa East Constituency for a tour, informed the Headmistress of the school, Madam Rosina Diedong, that the conditions he had seen demanded immediate action and that he had ordered 500 desks to save the situation.
Dr. Bawumia, who went through the Basic 1, 2 and 3 classrooms, urged the pupils not to be discouraged by the current conditions but study hard to become great future leaders.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been in the Upper West Region since Saturday and has so far visited over 40 communities in the Wa East, Lawra and Lambussie Constituencies.
Meanwhile, the headmistress of Kperisi Primary School, Rosina Diedong has been criticized by the Municipal Director of Education for allowing the press to cover the poor situation in her school. He also demandied that she renders an apology for her ‘disreputable’ action.
Diedong said she was told that she didn’t take permission from the directorate and that has brought the name of the school and the municipality into disrepute.
She however clearly explained that she never invited the journalists nor did she have any intention of maligning the government.
If it is an apology letter they want I will write it to them on Monday. I don’t fear being transferred out of the school. Even if I leave and the children have the furniture I will be happy,” Diedong said.
Diedong said she granted the interview without malice and spoke because she wanted to reach out to government and other benevolent organizations.
Surprisingly, the Wa Municipal Chief Executive has also denied asking the Kperisi headmistress to apologize.
Since the news broke I have not spoken to her or asked anybody to speak to her. I am surprised of hearing this,” the Wa MCE added.
