The Chief Justice Wood campaign comes in the wake of the petition by key members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to the president for the release of the three men who have become known as the ‘Montie 3’. The campaign aims at mobilising public support for the Chief Justice, who was directly verbally attacked by the Montie trio on the Accra based Montie FM.

The Montie 3; Alistair Nelson, Godwin Ako Gunn and radio host Salifu ‘Mugabe’ Maase, were sentenced to four months in prison after they were found guilty of criminal contempt. This was after they threatened on radio to kill Supreme Court Judges, should they rule in favour of opposition politicians, who brought a case against the Electoral Commission.

The four-month jail sentence however, has been frowned at by members of the NDC, most of whom described the judgement as very harsh. Their agitations subsequently led to their signing of a petition book meant to persuade the President to order release of the trio. The book so far has been signed by many high profile personalities including; Ministers of Education, and of Gender, Children and Social Protection.

The NDC members in their petition are asking Mahama to activate his prerogative of mercy powers under Article 72 of the 1992 Constitution, and grant pardon to the contemnors. The Ministers and other key figures who have endorsed the trending Montie 3 petition have however, been castigated by some who chose to be the voices of reason.

These are people in the likes of Prof. Ama Ata Aidoo, KT Hammond, and others who have spoken against the undue pressure mounted on the President by the petitioners. The section of people who are against the Montie 3 release petition, are now leading a campaign to support the Chief Justice.

They have created a hashtag #standwithherladyshipGeorginaWood, which has begun trending on social media.
