In a recent development, John Gatsi, an economist, has supported the challenge thrown to the Vice Presidential Candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia by President Mahama, to disclose the cost of the cedi redenomination exercise carried out in 2007.
In his reaction, John Gatsi supports Mahama’s challenge to Bawumia on the redomination cost issue, saying it only gives the latter credibility as well as shows his readiness to contest. According to him, he sees nothing wrong in it. Speaking to the media, John Gatsi opined that Bawumia’s response will promote transparency and bring closure to the matter, considering the fact that he has been out of government several years ago.
President Mahama during a rally in the Ablekuma North Constituency on Tuesday, asked Dr. Bawumia to reveal the cost of the exercise. The President had argued that since Bawumia was the Deputy Bank of Ghana at the time, he should be able to let Ghanaians know the actual cost of the exercise.
But the NPP veep hopeful who didn’t find the challenge funny, attacked the President, saying his challenge was fueled by propaganda. Expressing his anger in a Facebook post, Bawumia said Mahama’s challenge is a “demonstration of incompetence”. He criticised the President for not finding out important facts concerning the economy. This he said, including a Daily Graphic report which indicated that the cost of the re-domination was readily disclosed back in 2007.
While the economist supports Mahama’s challenge, some others are of the opinion that it is unnecessary. Member of Parliament’s Finance Committee, Kwaku Kwarteng, has described the request as unnecessary. He added that the President can easily have access to that information from the Bank of Ghana if he so wishes.
