Ghana’s dance hall king, Charles Nii Armah Mensah, known on stage as Shatte Wale has been disqualified from the upcoming 2016 Ghana Music Awards.

The Board of the Ghana Music Awards has announced that he will not be nominated for the Ghana Music Awards this year.

This was revealed when the Board of the awards met to address issues and controversies generated by this year’s awards at the World Trade Centre in Accra on Tuesday.

According to the CEO of Charter House and organisers of the awards, Theresa Ayoade, Shatta Wale doesn’t qualify for this year’s awards unless he completes the process of officially apologising for defaming the VGMA Board.

We would recall that Shatta Wale had last year engaged in a heated argument with Charter House during which he accused them of frustrating musicians in the country.

The Board also disclosed that the Gospel Album of the Year category has been scrapped for this year’s awards. Charter House explained that enough gospel albums were not submitted and those that were submitted did not meet the minimum requirements for three hit songs. The Board, therefore, noted that gospel albums will now compete with other genres this year.

It was also revealed at the press conference that Lifetime Achievement Awards will be merged with MUSIGA Merit Award this year. They explained that the decision was taken because both awards represent the same thing.

Also, there won’t be an award for the Music for Development Award.

The main Awards Night is scheduled for May 7 at the Accra International Conference Centre.

Moreover, unlike in previous years, there won’t be the Industry Awards Night which usually precedes the Awards Night.

Meanwhile, the dance hall King in a response to the disqualification has bluntly refused to render apologies to the Ghana Music Awards Board, saying they are to blame for his wrong attitudes and ignoble personality.

He disclosed this in a post laden with fury which he posted on Facebook Tuesday evening. The post reads:

WHY SHOULD I ALWAYS APOLOGIZE FOR THE MONSTER YOU HAVE MADE ME BECOME WHEN NO ONE HAS EVER APOLOGIZED FOR MAKING ME THIS WAY. IF YOU PUT ME IN A CAGE LIKE AN ANIMAL AND FEED ME WITH FRESH BLOODY MEAT FOR YEARS, IMAGINE WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF I BREAK THE CAGE AND COME OUT, I WILL BE FORCED TO LIVE THE BLOODY WAY YOU TRAINED ME”, the ‘Kakai’ hit singer fumed.
