Abedi Pele better than Okocha, is a debate which has raged in Africa for years as it massively splits opinions each time it is brought up
This almighty argument has somehow found its way once again, into Ghana’s agenda for discussion. This time it was brought up by the deputy captain of the Black Stars Andre ‘Dede’ Ayew.
Dede in a recent interview, said his father Abedi Ayew Pele is more skillful on the field than Nigerian legend Jay Jay Okocha. Ayew who admitted that both retired players had different styles of play, maintained that the former Ghana captain is more proficient at handling the ball.
I will say Abedi Pele is the most skillful. He had a lot of skills even though their style of play was different. He showed a lot of technique and a lot of finesse in his game, he said Speaking to Bola Ray on Starr FM.
Talking about Okocha, the Swansea forward pointed out that the Nigerian legendary player never won the African Player of the Year award by CAF. Though Okocha won the the BBC version, it wasn’t enough to term him a better player than Pele.
And also I saw all his games, I also saw Jay Jay Okocha; he was my generation. It’s sad that he never won the African best player; football is like that, he added
Even though Mr. Ayew believes that his father has a better mastery of the ball than the former Bolton Wanderers playmaker, he said Okocha deserves to have won the African Footballers of the Year award in his playing time. Pele on the hand, won the African Player of the Year award three times and also clinched the first edition of the BBC version.
