Ghana has been brought to tears once again by the Akyem Anyinase accident losses…
The country has been shaken by a very unfortunate accident which occurred over the weekend along a bridge over river Ako, close to Akyem Anyinase village in the Eastern Region. The accident which reportedly took place around 8:00 am on Saturday, April 29, involved a KIA Grandbird bus with registration number GT 4921-15 and a Toyota Fortuner, with registration number GT 6284–14, with three and five persons on board each of the vehicles respectively.
Reports reveal that the Toyota Fortuner belonging to the Kumasi South Hospital was conveying some staff of the hospital to the funeral of the former Akwatia MP, late Dr. Kofi Asare. On board the vehicle were 3 senior staff of the Kumasi hospital – 58-year-old Patience Fleisher, a medical doctor; 58-year-old Philomena Kwayie, Deputy Director of Nursing Services, and 40-year-old Kwame Ofori Boadu, a medical doctor; together with 60-year-old William Larbi, the driver of the vehicle.
Confirming the ugly incident to the media, the Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh narrated that the KIA Grandbird Bus driver, one Akuffo Jonas, aged 32 who was heading to Akim Wenchi from Kumasi rammed into the speeding Toyota Fortuner on the steel bridge over the Aku river, after he claimed to have lost control of his brakes.
According to ASP Tetteh, two of the medical staff on board the Fortuner (Dr. Fleisher and Mrs. Kwayie) died on the spot, with the driver and Dr. Boadu sustaining very critical injuries. The two KIA bus passengers also sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The four injured persons according to ASP Tetteh, were rushed to the Akim Oda hospital for treatment, while the dead were deposited at the hospital’s morgue. But Kwame Ofori Boadu, William Larbi and 29-year-old Kwabena Sefah whose cases were considered very critical were referred to the Emergency and Accident Department of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Kumasi for further treatments.
The bus driver was however, taken into custody by the police for further investigations.
