It was widely anticipated that the Black Stars skipper would join his former club Al Ain, after word of his failed Reading deal broke out. But Gyan joins Al Ahli to his fans’ greatest surprise; as the club is a major rival of his former club Al Ain.

Speaking to GHONE TV, the number 3 said he was rejected by his former club, when he opted to re-join them on a loan from Chinese side, Shanghai SIPG.

Gyan’s move to Al Ahli was a great disappointment to Al Ain supporters, who were anticipating his return to the club. Gyan had made a name for himself during his four seasons at his former UAE club. The forward had joined Al Ain from English Premier League side, Sunderland in 2011. He led the side to three UAE Pro League titles, one President’s Cup and one Super Cup, scoring 113 goals in all competitions

But his record breaking feat at the side was not enough to secure a come back for the striker. Having been rejected by his former club according to him, the former Sunderland player decided to join Al Ahli. Also speaking at the Rashid Stadium on Sunday, the forward said former manager Cosmin Olaroiu’s presence at Ahli was one of the main reasons he chose to join.

The 30-year-old has been handed his iconic jersey number 3. It is iconic indeed, as Gyan has been wearing the number three shirt since his days at Liberty in Ghana, and has identified with it throughout his playing career.

Football lovers in UAE are waiting in anticipation of the league season which starts next month, to see what positive changes the series of transfer deals would bring to the league.
