Ghana’s Foreign Affairs ministry is closely monitoring the case of a missing Ghanaian diplomat in South Africa…

There have been no traces of Charlotte Nana Yaa Nikoi, a director at the United Nations Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF), who has been missing for over a month now. The 50-year-old was last sseen on Cape Town’s Table Mountains, where she had reportedly gone hiking.

The Ghanaian government, as well as South African authorities, have been on the search for the missing Ghanaian diplomat. Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Ministry has also intensified efforts to find Charlotte Nikoi. South African government says Charlotte’s disappearance is not linked to the wave of xenophobic attacks in the country. However Ghana’s foreign Affairs is closely monitoring the situation.

According to reports, Charlotte’s spouse reported her missing after they had gone hiking up Table Mountain on Tuesday (March 21). Following the report, an extensive ground and aerial search were conducted to locate her but without success. At the time of her disappearance on March 21, Charlotte wore light-blue shorts, a cream black and brown cardigan, a sleeveless black top, brown sneakers, and oval-shaped glasses.

According to Joan Marais, a spokesperson for the South African Wilderness Search and Rescue team, despite volunteers working with Skymed aerial rescue services to search the mountain, there was no sign of Yaa Nikoi.

It still remains uncertain if the missing Ghanaian diplomat is dead or alive. However, the Foreign Affairs minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey is positive that the government of South Africa will lead the efforts to unravel the truth behind the disappearance.

This is not the first time a popular Ghanaian figure has gone missing under mysterious circumstances. In July 2014, musician Theophilus Tagoe, popularly known as Castro went missing alongside a friend. The Afrobeats artist reportedly went missing while using Jet skis in the Ghanaian coastal town of Ada.

Till date, no bodies have been recovered by the very many investigators who have been on the case. Many attempts have been made to uncover the mystery behind their disappearance to no avail. But it is hoped that this would not be the case for the missing Ghanaian diplomat.
