A convoy of the flagbearer of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings has been involved in a fatal crash which claimed the life of NDP chairman for the Offinso Constituency of the Ashanti Region, Isaac Mensah Afedzi. The tragic incident occurred on Monday afternoon along the Techiman-Kumasi highway in Brong-Ahafo Region.
According to eyewitnesses reports, the NDP convoy was travelling at a high speed from Techiman to Kumasi. While some sources have it that one of the vehicles collided head-on with an oncoming Burkinabe truck, others say the vehicle was hit from behind which caused it to somersault severally.
Whichever way, the accident left nine persons seriously injured, of which the NDP chairman was the worst hit. There is also a discrepancy in the reports of the NDP chairman’s death. While some reported that he was immediately rushed to a clinic for treatment and subsequently transferred to the Nkinkanso Hospital where he gave up the ghost before dawn, others have it that he died on the spot.
Meanwhile, other injured passengers were conveyed to the Holy family Hospital in Techiman where they are currently receiving treatments.
According to the General Secretary of the NDP, Mohammed Frimpong, the NDP flag bearer, Nana Kodu fortunately escaped the accident unhurt. Reports also have it that she has proceeded to the Western Region with her campaign tour. Police have also commenced investigations into the incident.
Nana Konadu resumed her campaign activities in earnest after her disqualification by the Electoral Commission (EC) was reconsidered.
It is hoped that politicians will take cognizance of the fact that this is a critical period and be very careful with their movements to forestall road crashes and other ugly incidents.
