President of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, has picked his wife to run as his vice presidential candidate ahead of the country’s elections in November. The country’s First Lady, Rosario Murillo, already has a prominent role as the chief government spokeswoman, and is widely seen as sharing powers with her husband. Critics have constantly accused the first couple of running the country like its their personal business.
Having previously described the joint government with her as a symbol of equality, the Nicaraguan President chooses wife as running mate upon registering his own candidacy for re-election.
The First couple officially submitted their candidacy papers in the capital Managua, accompanied by the legal adviser of their Sandinista party.
His announcement was met with massive cheer among the ruling party’s supporters, who were obviously in support of the move by the President. The main opposition party in Nicaragua, Liberal Party, are reportedly behind in the election polls. This leaves various oppositions rather concerned, that her promotion may herald the rise of a new family dynasty in the impoverished Central American nation.
The Nicaraguan President is really hoping to get majority of the votes in the coming elections. If eventually the President succeeds, it would be his third term in office. Mrs. Mourilla who is the Mother of the president’s seven children, has an unbeatable charisma. She is regularly seen on TV discussing policy and promoting her own brand of New Age spirituality.
