Today, November 29 marks President John Mahama’s birthday, and goodwill messages are rolling in from different National Democratic Congress (NDC) loyalists across the country. Mahama turns 58 today -just a year younger than Ghana and as you can rightly guess, his ardent supporters are asking for a second term as his birthday gift.
More so, Afia Schwarzenegger who’s love for Mahama has become so obvious to Ghanaians over the years; has taken to social media to chant praises as well as goodwill messages to the President.
In a video she uploaded today, Afia stressed that to celebrate Mahama’s birthday, Ghanaians need to hand the President a second term in office as a gift, to continue the massive developments he has already started for Ghana. [See Video]

1. Place of Birth
Sure almost every Ghanaian knows that President Mahama hails from the North, but not many know his place of birth. Mahama was born on November 29, 1958, in Damongo in the Damango-Daboya constituency of Northern region, into a political tradition, dating back to the country’s First Republic. To state the already known fact also; Mahama hails from Bole in the Northern region.
2. He Is An Achimota Old Boy
For those who do not know, young President Mahama attended Achimota school. He also attended Ghana Secondary School, Tamale, Northern region. Mahama attended University of Ghana, Legon, where he received a bachelor’s degree in History.
3. The Intriguing “4” Factor
Talk about coincidence! Apart from being the 4th President of Ghana under the 4th republic, President Mahama is also the 4th person named “John” to rule Ghana. The first was Jerry John Rawlings; the second was John Agyekum Kuffuor, while the third one was John Atta Mills.
4. His Father Held a Leadership Position in Ghana
President Mahama’s father, Mr Emmanuel Adama Mahama, was the first Member of Parliament for the West Gonja Constituency. His father was also the first Regional Commissioner of the Northern Region, during Ghana’s First Republic.
5. First Ghanaian President to Have Served at all Levels of Political Office
Mahama assumed office of presidency on 24th July 2012, by virtue of being the vice president; following the death of the then President -John Evans Atta mills, which occurred on the same day. Mahama subsequently won the December 2012 general election, where he beat his rival, Nana Akufo-Addo of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
President Mahama has indeed served at all levels of political office; as an MP for Bole (Jan. 1997 – Jan. 2009), as Deputy Minister for Communications (April 1997 -Nov. 1998), as Minister of Communication (Nov. 1998 – Jan. 2001), Vice-President (7 Jan. 2009 -24 July 2012) and as President (24 July -till date).
